Volsef

Volsef believes modular is the future of sound design and supplies Synthesizer New Zealand with with quality hand-made products, striving to a similar goal as the store which is enabling people to enter the world of modular synthesis.

Today we will do a short story on one of New Zealand's few modular synth builders, Volsef Modular.

Ran by Jared Mason and known as artist under the name Volsef, he has been enjoying listening to electronics music since he was 17.

Having the need to know how things are made and how the world works, he found himself playing with a DAW called FL Studio, trying to discover the ins and outs of production.

Being young and feeling the need to do something with his life, he decided to dig deeper into Electronic Music production, and ended up enrolling in the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand (MAINZ) Where he graduated with a Diploma in Audio Engineering and Electronic Music Production in 2015.

This education covered a wide variety of subjects such as studio recording, mixing, mastering, sound physics, web design, synthesis/sound design, and electronics. After being focused on production for many years, and also working in a different industry, he decided to set a plan for the world of music business and e-commerce, where he noticed the world of Eurorack Synthesis. He was drawn to the knobs, buttons, flashing lights, and opportunity to play with an instrument outside of the computer. He had owned many hardware synthesizers before, but none that were as deeply personal and custom as a Eurorack synth.

In his attempt to enter the world of Eurorack, he noticed the equipment was very expensive, straight away he proceeded to learn how to construct a case, build a power supply, and got underway with building electronic circuits on stripboard and assembling DIY kits from PCBs he ordered from overseas.

He soon taught himself the manufacturing process he currently uses today to build Eurorack modules. During this time, he noticed there was a lot of room for growth in the NZ Modular market. His goal with volsef.com was to introduce a set of affordable modules, DIY kits, and accessories to help people enter the world of Eurorack in New Zealand.

As far as music goes, Volsef's music finds it's signature sound from emulating small parts from different genres. Boom bap hip hop drums, DnB basses, and the darkness of dubstep. He produces music that he personally wants to listen to. Loosely based on half-time dnb, Volsef's music is appropriate for outdoor festivals and doof's.
